In a heartwarming celebration of dedication and unwavering commitment, the Warners Bay Bulldogs Australian Football Club awarded Ron McKenna with a prestigious life membership during their 2023 presentation night. This honour recognizes Ron’s remarkable 21-year journey of service to the club, underlining the crucial role of behind-the-scenes individuals like him in the success of football clubs.
The presentation night served as a momentous occasion for everyone associated with the club, coming together to celebrate the 2023 season. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the life membership bestowed upon Ron McKenna, whose enduring contributions have left an indelible mark on the club.
Ron’s journey with the Warners Bay Bulldogs began in 2002, and his dedication only grew stronger with each passing year. He took on the role of junior president in 2003, a position he held for an impressive eight years. During this time, Ron served as the team manager for his son Luke’s team, which included the prestigious Newcastle representative team. As his son progressed into senior football, Ron seamlessly transitioned into the role of a senior club general committee member.
Within a mere two years, Ron was elevated to the position of senior club president, a title he held for three years before temporarily stepping back due to work commitments. Nevertheless, Ron’s dedication to the club never wavered. He remained an integral part of the senior club as a general committee member for an additional two years before taking on the role of senior Vice President for three seasons, even amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the most heartwarming aspects of Ron’s journey was his success in persuading his son Luke to return to the club in 2022. This decision bore fruit as Luke played a pivotal role in the club’s Black Diamond Plate premiership victory, securing a tight win over Muswellbrook with a match-sealing kick.
Mark Bottrill, the current club Vice-President and club steward, offered glowing praise for Ron, saying, “Ron’s contribution to the Warners Bay Football Club has been immense across both our junior and senior programs. His positive nature, can-do attitude, and deep affection for the entire club have shone through during countless seasons. This acknowledgment and recognition are richly deserved.”
Beyond his administrative roles, Ron also served as team manager for numerous seasons, endearing himself to the club’s members. Even to this day, he remains a familiar and beloved figure around the club, volunteering on game days and actively participating in events such as Old Dogs Day and various functions.
On behalf of the Warners Bay Bulldogs AFC, we express our heartfelt gratitude to Ron McKenna for his exceptional contributions to the club and extend our warmest congratulations on his well-deserved life membership. Ron’s legacy of selfless service and unwavering dedication will undoubtedly continue to inspire the club for years to come.
