Round 11 of the BDAFL saw the Ressies and Premier Grade host the Maitland Saints after the wet weather moved the match to Feighan Park whilst the ladies hosted the newly formed Port Stephens Power.
The ressies Round 11 match against Maitland was must win game for the boys to stay in finals contention. The match also saw stalwart and Ressies coach Lydon Bligh-Parker celebrate 50 games for the club. The opening quarter was a close encounter with Maitland coming out on top at the first break due to their pressure, run and skills and Warners Bay’s inaccuracy. Ryan Clarke was the only Bulldog to register a major in the opening term kicking 2 goals. In the second quarter the boys began to get on top of Maitland but could not break away again due to kicking inaccuracy. At the major break, the boys had a 12 point lead.
In the 3rd and 4th term, the boys began to kick into gear due to Michael Vo and Dan Lincoln’s work rate through the middle which saw them rack up plenty of touches. The ever reliable Ryan Clarke and Leigh Anderson were able to capitalise on the midfield dominance and put some goals on the board and run over the top of Maitland. Young dogs Nick Pattey, Lachie Dennis, Riley Williams, William Scott and Connor Manwarring were very impressive and continue to develop as footballers showing what lies ahead for the future of the club. Robbie Barlow was dominant in the ruck and impressed with a big pack mark and long range goal. As usual, Thomas Van Koeverden let his physical presence be known with some strong tackling. New recruit Tim Smith was also impressive and provided plenty of hard leads out of the forward line whilst Lydon Bligh-Parker was solid down forward and back as usual. Finally, crowd favourite Jacque Bonnay kicked goal number 2 of the season from as many shots and will no doubt be showing Daniel Gray how to kick after Daniel registered 9 behinds on the weekend.

Round 11 saw the girls take on Port Stephens on home turf. With Warners Bay sitting just outside the top 8, it was essential to ensure a high scoring win for the women. From the first bounce the Bulldogs midfield dominated the match, holding the ball in their attacking half. The first goal of the match was locked in by Full Forward, Rosie Holmes. Kirsty Jedrezejak returned in full health to extend the Doggies lead by a further goal. Sammy “Pocket-Rocket” Delaney had another stand out match, continuously outrunning the oppositions defence and scoring her first goal of the game. Coach Tracey Baker made impact through the centre and up front, bringing the score to 29-0 at quarter time.
Forward Melanie Cook opened the scoring into the second quarter, with a shot in close range of the goals. Evans was strong up front again, kicking a goal before Delaney followed suit for Warners Bay. Sammy Lawrence again proving her strength, kicking a goal from quite the distance after playing a defensive first quarter.
The second half was much the same, with Caitlin Wolfe scoring in the opening minutes. Holmes proved a useful target in the box scoring the following two goals, giving her the first hat trick for the match. Pittman consistently drove the ball through the top 50, putting the final points on the board for the third quarter. Emma Chester had a strong defending game, scooping any loose ball without losing momentum. Chester furthered her impact on the day by locking in a goal in the opening minutes of the final quarter. Baker and Lawrence followed before Di Crep snapped another magnificent goal worthy of notice. Arguably, becoming Crep’s signature move in the forward 50. Pittman and Delaney finished up the match with a goal each, taking them to a hattrick alongside Holmes. Port Stephens were kept scoreless, with Warners Bay finishing on (22.20) 152.
Steph Russell again moved out of her defensive position, and had a solid game in both the ruck and on the wing. Pittman, Lawrence and Delaney also landed a mention with their impressive form and goal accuracy. Leesa Wholohan, a consistent for the Bulldogs had a great game with pressure both defensively and in attack. Hannah Gow, a key defender for Warners Bay, had a run out of the backline and demonstrated her ability to gain possession and drive the ball being one of the best on ground.
Next week the Doggies take on Nelson Bay, competition leader on home soil. No doubt the women will put up tough competition as always against the Marlins.

In Premier Grade, the boys certainly were looking to take full advantage of the change of venues and with a strong squad available were confident leading into the game of a good showing. Injuries have plagued the side this season to date but with the club having depth this season we have been able to field competitive sides each week. New player to the club Ben Howarth was given his debut by coach Marty Reiman and this makes him senior debutant number 12 for the season.
With the boys sitting in 4th spot and reaching the midway point of the season it was a must win game and another opportunity to put in a solid 4 quarter performance to follow on from a dominant display against Lake Macquarie the previous week. With the return of swans academy young gun Ky McGrath from injury for his first game of the season being another added bonus to slot back into our midfield the boys showed from their attitude at the first bounce that they were switched on and ready to play. The boys started well with the usual midfield consisting of Hunter, Roachy, Spinksy and Voey proving a real handful for Maitland as the boys won the clearances and provided our forwards with some real opportunities as we drove the footy forward. Luke Roach was primed for a big game as he plucked everything that was sent his way playing centre half forward and being a real focal point for us going forward. For Luke, this was a breakout game culminating in a strong display of contested marking and forward presence. Our forwards have been working hard on their positional plays and ball movement at training and this paid dividends with the boys closing out the 1st quarter with 7 goals on the board to Maitland’s nil.
The second quarter saw a spirited Maitland challenge the boys at stoppages and at the contest but with the boys starting to apply some real tackle pressure around the ground, use the handball to great effect and our back 6 in defence pushing up to squeeze Maitland’s forwards for space the plan worked a treat as the scoreboard began to tick over in our favour. Ky McGrath proved why he is touted as a future draft prospect with a dominant display of inside and outside work playing in the midfield and along with young Dillon in the ruck also showing his promise, it was good to see the young fellas influence the game. As the forward 50 entries began to climb so did the shots on goal from our sharpshooters up front with the likes of JD, Cougs, Macca and Corey starting to pull down a few marks and link up well. Missing some easy set shots with some wayward kicking will likely lead to some more attention towards goal kicking at training, which I am sure will suit a few of the boys just fine. The return of key power forward Kayne Gibbs was also a highlight as he shared his role between Ruck and Full forward.
A little spotfire broke out on the eve of half time as our young ruckman Dillon was taken out late as he kicked which saw the boys leap to his defence and let Maitland know we weren’t too happy with it. The boys have shown a big improvement in discipline this season so we expect that to continue as we drive forward into the back half of the season. Although a half time ‘address’ from Coach Marty was warranted to remind the boys of how we want to play football.
The 3rd and 4th quarter saw the young bulldogs tighten the screws and play some really exciting football as we transitioned from defence to attack and our backline members led by Linc, Dev, Gibbo, Madge, Turner, Cyril and young gun Riley have done a great job over the past fortnight in keeping the opposition goalless across both games now. A blend of skill, composure, experience and dogged determination has seen the defenders grow a lot of confidence across this first half of the season as they build some cohesion. Young Swans academy member Isaiah Olsen also proved a handful up forward as he showed glimpses of his potential finishing the game with 4 goals.
It must also be mentioned that Maitland were very valiant till the end given they had multiple players backing up from their plate side as they too manage their own injury toll and a number of players being unavailable. We wish them well for the remainder of their season and will play them again in Round 17 up at their home on 4th August.
Overall Coach Reiman and his assistant Bucks could not fault the effort of our boys and its exciting to see that our training effort is starting to lead to the boys playing some decent footy. For the second week in a row, the boys kept the opposition goal less which also very pleasing for the coaches showing the boys can keep the pressure on for 4 quarters. Sitting in 4th position on the ladder and with a number of players expected to return from injury these next few weeks we turn our attention now to the Nelson Bay Marlins next week at home and will aim to continue playing our brand of Bulldogs football as we chase another victory at the Kennel.
