Yet another hard-fought match for the Warners Bay women on the weekend. Round 5 saw the girls take a loss on home turf against Wyong Lakes, however, the margin did not reflect the contest. The competition was on from the first bounce, and the effort from the Bulldogs remained strong through the entire four quarters.
Mid-fielder Caitlin Wolfe locked in the first goal of the game with a spectacular mark in the 50. It was a through a convincing play by the girls, taking them into the lead. The rest of the quarter saw Wyong Lakes secure three goals leaving the score at 6-18 at quarter time. Although the possession remained even between the two teams, the second and third quarter only widened the gap in favour of Wyong Lakes.
In her first official match for Warners Bay, Samantha Lawrence took a convincing mark in the final quarter against a heavy contest inside the 50m arc. Lawrence seized the opportunity, locking in a great goal for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs and their substitute coach, Emma Chester, were happy in their efforts on the day. It was difficult to fault the girls performance, with the entire team putting in 100% and fighting to the final minutes despite the score.
The midfield saw some of the best on field for the day, with Kate Booth, Wolfe, Brittany Wood all strong contributors and Kira Jones a standout on the wing. Steph Russell made her return known being a standout in the backs with constant pressure and shutting down many attempts at goal.
A special mention to the Best on Ground, Katie Johnston, who had an incredible game. Johnson gained possession constantly against her opponents, using her speed and skill to outrun and clear the ball, creating great plays and significant advantage for Warners Bay.
This week, the girls will be heading to Muswellbrook to take on the cats. If their round 5 performance is anything to go by, the Doggies will be hard to beat.
